Understanding Post-Consumer Recycled Plastics in Design
At Wehlers, we see plastic not as a problem, but as a resource. Our furniture is a testament to the power of post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastics to transform waste into durable, beautiful design. While global efforts to curb plastic pollution face significant challenges, our approach offers a tangible, circular solution.
The Global Plastic Crisis: A Failed Consensus 🌍
Plastic pollution is one of the most pressing environmental issues of our time. It contaminates our oceans, harms wildlife, and contributes to climate change. Despite this, international efforts to tackle the problem at its source have been hampered. For example, recent negotiations by the United Nations to create a global, legally binding treaty on plastic pollution have failed to reach an agreement. The key sticking point has been a lack of consensus on controlling the production of virgin plastic, with some nations prioritizing economic interests over environmental ones. This stalemate means the world cannot rely on a top-down, global solution to solve this crisis. Instead, the responsibility falls to innovative businesses and conscious consumers to create change.
The Wehlers Solution: Designing with Post-Consumer Recycled Plastics ♻️
We tackle the plastic problem head-on by using post-consumer recycled plastics as a primary material in our furniture. This isn't just a marketing gimmick; it’s a fundamental part of our design philosophy.
We source waste streams that are typically difficult to recycle, such as discarded fishing nets, e-waste from old keyboards, and medical waste from used insulin pens. We transform these materials into durable, high-quality pellets, which we then use to create new furniture. This process reduces the demand for virgin plastic, lowers carbon emissions, and diverts waste from landfills and oceans.
Our business is built on the principles of the circular economy, championed by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. We design our furniture to be easily disassembled, making it simple to repair or recycle. This ensures that the materials retain their value and can be reused in a continuous loop.
A Solution for the World: The Wehlers Take-Back System 🤝
The greatest challenge with conventional furniture is what happens at the end of its life. It's often sent to a landfill, where it sits for centuries, contributing to pollution. Our solution is simple and revolutionary: a take-back program where we guarantee to take back every piece of Wehlers furniture. Click here to learn more on the program
When you're finished with your chair, we'll collect it. We then either refurbish it for a new home or, if it's truly at the end of its useful life, we dismantle it to recycle the components for new production. This closed-loop system is a powerful way to eliminate waste and create a truly sustainable model. By choosing Wehlers, you're not just buying a chair; you're participating in a tangible solution to the global plastic crisis, showing that it's possible to build a better future, one recycled piece at a time.
