The R.U.M. Chair Stacks Up to 12 High — Without Compromising on Design or Circularity
Most stackable chairs are a compromise. You get the practicality, but you sacrifice the design. Or you get the design, but the chairs are too fragile for daily stacking. Or they are made from virgin plastic that ends up in landfill when they wear out.
The R.U.M. Chair was designed to solve all three problems at once.
Stacks Up to 12 High
The R.U.M. Chair stacks up to 12 chairs high — a critical number for high-density storage in offices, conference rooms, university lecture halls, and hospitality venues.
This is not accidental. C.F. Møller Design, one of Scandinavia's most respected architecture firms, engineered the stacking geometry into the chair from day one. The seat shell and leg geometry are calibrated so that each chair locks securely into the one below, creating a stable column without requiring a dedicated stacking trolley.
The practical result: 200 chairs can be stored in a fraction of the floor space they would otherwise occupy. For multi-purpose venues and flexible office layouts, this is a meaningful operational advantage.
Contract-Grade Durability — Built for Repetition
A chair that stacks 12 high needs to withstand being stacked 12 high — repeatedly, by people in a hurry, for years.
The R.U.M. Chair is made from 100% post-consumer recycled polypropylene — the same material used in industrial food containers and medical equipment. It is impact-resistant, UV-stable for outdoor use, and does not crack, fade, or deform under normal contract conditions.
The metal frame is made from 100% recycled steel, TÜV-tested to EN 16139:2013 Level 2 — the highest standard for contract seating in public and commercial spaces.
The chairs are in daily use in offices, university campuses, hotels, and event venues across Europe, including by Novo Nordisk, LEGO, Lifestyle & Design Cluster, and VIA University College.
Danish Design — Not Just Functional
Stackability is typically the enemy of design. Most stacking chairs look like stacking chairs: anonymous, institutional, forgettable.
The R.U.M. Chair was designed by C.F. Møller Design — the same studio behind some of Denmark's most celebrated buildings, including Aarhus University. The brief was to create a chair that works as hard as a contract stacking chair but looks like it belongs in a design showroom.
The result is a chair with clean Scandinavian lines, available in three material narratives:
- Fisherman's Green — recycled ocean fishing nets, for biophilic and coastal commercial projects
- Keyboard Black — recycled corporate e-waste, the standard for premium tech and corporate interiors
- Pharma Blue — recycled pharmaceutical and medical industrial waste, for life science environments
All three colours are consistent across the full R.U.M. collection: Original, Armrest, Sledge, Barstool, Wheels, and Stool.
Stackable and Circular — The Combination That Matters
A stackable chair that ends up in landfill after 10 years is a temporary solution. The R.U.M. Chair is designed for multiple life cycles.
Every R.U.M. Chair comes with the Wehlers Take-Back Guarantee: when the chairs reach end of use, Wehlers collects them and recycles 100% of the material — zero landfill. The same polypropylene becomes the next generation of chairs.
This is documented. For organisations with ESG reporting requirements, Wehlers provides verified carbon footprint data per chair (15.2 kg CO₂e), recycled content certification, and chain-of-custody documentation for the take-back.
Stackable. Circular. Designed for the long term.
Who Uses the R.U.M. Chair
The R.U.M. Chair is in use across a wide range of environments where stackability and sustainability both matter:
- Corporate offices — flexible meeting rooms, town halls, event spaces
- Universities and education — lecture halls, canteens, student commons
- Hotels and hospitality — conference rooms, event venues, outdoor terraces
- Public spaces — museums, libraries, cultural institutions
