Most Sustainable Chair?
The most sustainable chair
you can buy.
Most furniture brands talk about sustainability. Wehlers measures it. The R.U.M. chair has a verified carbon footprint of just 15.1 kg CO₂e — while the average office chair emits nearly five times as much.
Carbon footprint comparison
R.U.M. vs. the competition
Verified CO₂e figures per chair. Lower is better. The gap is not small.

What it's made from
Waste in. Chair out.
R.U.M. stands for ReUsedMaterials. Every version of the chair is made from a specific post-consumer waste stream — nothing virgin, nothing new.
Discarded fishing nets
Collected and sorted by hand in Denmark. Ghost nets are one of the ocean's most persistent pollutants — R.U.M. turns them into durable seating.
Electronic waste
Plastic from discarded electronic devices — the fastest-growing waste stream in Europe. All e-waste material is sourced from Austria and given a second life in the chair.
Insulin pens
142 used insulin pens go into every single Pharma Blue R.U.M. chair. Collected in pharmacies in Scandinavia, this pharmaceutical waste becomes some of the lowest-footprint seating in the world.
Circular economy
The chair that
comes back.
Most furniture is designed to be thrown away. R.U.M. is designed to come back. Using only two materials — recycled plastic and recycled steel — the chair can be 100% recycled without significant material downgrading.
Wehlers collects chairs after use. The materials go back into new chairs. That's not a claim. That's the business model.
Post-consumer waste collected
Fishing nets, e-waste, insulin pens — sourced from existing waste streams across Scandinavia and Austria.
R.U.M. chair manufactured
Two materials only: recycled plastic seat/back, recycled steel base. Each chair has an embedded microchip to track its full lifecycle.
Used — for years
Conference rooms, dining rooms, offices, schools. Designed by C.F. Møller Architects for real, long-term use.
Collected by Wehlers
At end of life, Wehlers takes the chairs back. No landfill. The materials are recycled or reused in new production.
Why it matters
The numbers behind the story
Real figures. Not marketing.
The R.U.M. (15.1 kg CO₂e) has a carbon footprint nearly six times lower than the Herman Miller Aeron (87 kg CO₂e), one of the industry's most studied chairs.
Only recycled plastic and recycled steel. Two materials means the chair can actually be recycled at end of life — not downcycled, not incinerated.
Every Pharma Blue chair uses waste material from 142 insulin pens collected in Denmark — a specific, traceable, verified source of post-consumer waste.
No new plastic is used in the R.U.M. chair shell. In a world producing 430 million tonnes of plastic per year, that's not a small thing.
